Passengers travelling through Heathrow Airport this week will be greeted by a scent-sational new installation containing more than 2,000 fresh flowers.

The giant floral map of the world, created by artist Larry Walshe, stands at Terminal 5 oozing perfumed smells to celebrate the new season of fragrances.

The grand 11ft by 18ft living artwork gives of the aroma of a mix of blooms including roses, orange blossom and lavender.

Each country in the map the fresh scents that feature in the most beloved fragrances of different nations.

Roses hit the right note for floral-loving Brits, with lavender and orange blossom the favoured scents in the US and Mexico, while mint and mandarin feature in India and spicier, oriental scents such as cinnamon and ginger are the preferred choice by those in the UAE.

The most popular scent across the globe is jasmine (28%), closely followed by lavender (27%) and rose (24%).

Chris Annetts, Heathrow’s retail and service proposition director, said: “Heathrow is home to around 3,405 fragrances across 104 brands.

“We wanted to celebrate our amazing collection by bringing the scents to life and help our passengers better understand the fragrance notes they enjoy the most.

“Larry’s floral artwork is a fantastic way for people to explore new fragrances as well as enjoying their favourites when they fly with us.”

Heathrow's fragrance report also highlights customer trends for fragrances purchased at Heathrow as well those from around the world.

It revealed as a nation Germany will follow their nose when choosing a fragrance (40%), while India is all about the brand name (22%) and Brits are least likely to be influenced by a celebrity endorsement.

Other highlights included 22% of Brits admitted certain fragrances evoke memories of a past lover; one in five (22%) British men stated they wear aftershave to feel more desirable while 34% of women said it makes them feel happy and boosts their confidence.

The installation will be housed at the terminal until Saturday (September 24).
