The man leading the consortium of headteachers behind a new free school in Hounslow has expressed his delight after it was given the go-ahead.

The HIP (Hounslow Improvement Partnership) was one of three new secondary free schools in the borough granted approval this week by the Department for Education.

It is due to open in September 2017 in the Brentford and Isleworth area, subject to a funding agreement being secured.

It will take 180 year seven pupils each year, expanding until it reaches its full capacity of 1,150, and will eventually include a sixth form.

The school is the brainchild of Hounslow's existing secondary and primary school teachers, who have combined their expertise to address the growing demand for more school places.

Chiswick School headteacher Tony Ryan chairs the free school project group and his fellow directors are Euan Ferguson, head of Isleworth & Syon School, and Phil Ward, head of Heston Community School.

All three heads are also looking to expand their own schools to help provide the projected 30 extra forms of entry needed in the borough by 2019.

Mr Ryan said: "The creation of this new academy is a unique response from Hounslow school headteachers (both primary and secondary) working closely with the local authority and central government to provide high quality solutions to what is potentially a very difficult problem with a population boom currently coming through the primary sector.

"The intention was always to create a successful co-educational, non-denominational school where it was needed most. This new school, together with recent expansion feasibility exercises at Chiswick School, Isleworth & Syon and Heston Community School goes a long way to providing high-quality options for local parents and students.

"We are grateful for the high levels of support offered by local parents and will now put our efforts into securing suitable accommodation and creating a visionary school to open its doors to the first cohort of students in September 2017."

All Hounslow's existing secondary schools are rated good or outstanding by Ofsted and GCSE results in the borough are well above the London and national levels.

Free schools are state-funded schools which can be opened by anyone and are independent from the local authority.

The Green School for Boys, in Isleworth, and the Logic Studio School, sponsored by Feltham Community College, were also among the latest wave of free schools approved by the Government on Monday (March 9).
