A young student from Hayes has said it was 'an unexpected surprise' to be given a coveted award from her university at her graduation ceremony.

Gladys Ojera was given the Best Pharmaceutical Science Student award from the University of Greenwich during a ceremony in Rochester Cathedral in Kent.

The former pupil of Bishop Ramsey C of E School in Ruislip received the award from the Faculty of Engineering and Science for her achievements during her studies.

Gladys, 21, said: “It was an unexpected surprise. I am delighted to have won, and I am so grateful to the lecturers and my fellow students.”

After now completing her studies Gladys plans to take a gap year before continuing on in her education to start a Master's degree in 2017.

Pro vice-chancellor at the University of Greenwich, Professor Martin Snowden, said: “It is a marvelous achievement to be one of our prize winners.

“There is great competition among our talented students to be selected for a special award and I am delighted that her hard work and dedication has been richly rewarded.

“Gladys deserves her full success and I look forward to seeing her embark on a successful careers.”
