A primary school in Hayes was closed due to "security issues".

Charville Primary School closed on Friday (June 23) due to issues in the local area.

A traveller encampment had been set up off nearby Charville Lane, after allegedly moving from the Dawley Road area.

A local resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "Yesterday [Thursday] evening I got a text from the school saying due to the problems in Charville Lane, and after liaising with the police, there will be no school tomorrow."

She added: "It's outrageous... all those hundreds of kids at school, and all the parents who work having to find urgent childcare for the day."

A statement from Charville Primary School, for parents, says: "The school is closed today, the June 23, due to local security issues.

"We will keep you updated via text."

In a letter to parents, Mrs Kelly, headteacher, wrote: "This letter is to inform you that school had to be closed today due to the ongoing concerns around the issue in Charville Lane.

"We have spent today working closely with the Metropolitan Police and Kingdom Security from the local authority to ensure effective safeguarding and we will re-open on Monday June 26 but we have had to put a number of things in place, with the support of the police."

Hillingdon Police tweeted that the encampment were removed but confirmed it was not borough police that closed Charville Primary School.

The school re-opened on Monday (June 26) but some security measures were still in place.

An updated statement read: "We re-open tomorrow (Monday June 26) but nursery remains closed.

"Drop off is as normal and staff will be available to answer questions. If this alters we will update you."

The Metropolitan Police and Hillingdon Council have been contacted for comment.
