The Mayor of London has gifted £40,000 to Harrow Council to plant more trees in the borough.

More than 270 trees will be planted across 11 sites thanks to the cash injection - making each tree worth around £148.

Harrow Council has been granted a total of £40,194 from the Greener City Fund for Tree Planting from the Greater London Authority (GLA).

It is hoped the new greenery will improve facilities for residents and visitors while encouraging healthy living activities, such as walking, cycling or running.

The funding will also help reduce air and noise pollution and reduce flood risks through the planting of trees, the council has said.

Councillor Graham Henson, cabinet member for environment, said: "Christmas has come early for Harrow. It might not be 270 Christmas trees, but this much welcomed funding means these extra trees will breathe new life into our parks.

"Our parks are a major community asset – loved and enjoyed by residents.

"This additional investment will improve and bring more health benefits as well as make our parks greener, attractive and more accessible for everyone.

"I look forward to seeing the first trees grow and bloom as we build a better Harrow together."
