Two schools in Harrow and Brent are among the first schools to complete an AQA Political Literacy course that has been introduced in the wake of Britain's decision to leave the European Union .

Bentley Wood in Harrow and Preston Manor in Wembley are among three schools to have completed the course, while schools in Fulham Broadway will be the next to embark on the course in September.

Shout Out UK, an online news network, has began to introduce the course in an attempt to encourage young people to become engaged with politics after Brexit.

The course, which is certified by academic qualifications provider AQA, covers British Politics, International Relations and Employability and Politics.

As part of the course, students will learn to campaign, fund-raise and become confident when debating and public speaking, as well as teaching young people that politics is the basis for everyday life and therefore, how it makes sense to be involved.

Roisin Murray, a teacher at Bentley Wood High School, said: "Understanding politics is key to understanding how society works.

"Shout Out UK’s Political Literacy course supports students in developing their political awareness so they can take a more active role in society.

"After sitting in on several lessons with Shout Out UK and our students, I can honestly say it has been a fantastic opportunity for our students to develop their knowledge and awareness of current affairs as well as their ability to speak in public, debate and present a discussion coherently.

"This has also helped students to develop their self-esteem and confidence."

Shout Out UK also wants to expand the course into schools in Hammersmith , Chelsea and Hillingdon , with the aim of working with schools across London.

There has been heated debate in the UK since the referendum results were announced, with police linking it to a rise in hate crime while Uxbridge and South Ruislip MP Boris Johnson has come under fire for his role in Britain's exit .
