A bid to make Hammersmith and Fulham the London Borough of Culture within the next few years is under way.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council hopes to borough will be lauded with the prestigious honour and is calling on its residents to help back the bid.

Two boroughs will be crowned winners in February 2018, taking the title of London Borough of Culture for 2019 and 2020 respectively.

The council is asking residents to go to www.hfculture.londonfilling where residents can fill out questionnaires and share ideas, and register their support.

Consultation events will also take place at:

  • November 10, midday-2pm, at Fulham Palace in Bishop Terrick’s Room
  • November 13, 5pm-7pm at Lyric Hammersmith in the Orr Room
  • November 16, 7pm-9pm at Hammersmith Town Hall in the Small Hall

The competition will see the capital’s 32 boroughs bid for more than £1m of funding to stage a programme of cultural events and initiatives.

It will also be supported by a grant of £300,000 from City Bridge Trust, the City of London Corporation’s charitable funder.

It is part of the London mayor Sadiq Khan’s plans to celebrate culture across the capital and support the arts in London.

City Hall said the winning boroughs would be “chosen based on their artistic vision and ambition to deliver outstanding cultural initiatives in their local area, putting communities at the centre of the programme’s design and delivery”.

London's unique and diverse culture

Speaking at the launch of the London Borough of Culture in June, Mr Khan said: “Culture is the DNA of our city. It has the power to transform communities and to bring people closer together.

“Now, more than ever, there is a pressing need to reach out to our neighbours and celebrate London’s unique and diverse culture.

“London Borough of Culture is a great way to do just that whilst showing the world that our cultural gems extend way beyond the centre of the capital to all corners of the city.”

The deadline for submissions is December 1.
