The elderly man involved in a collision with a police car attending an emergency call in Hammersmith Broadway is likely to have "life-changing injuries".

The busy Hammersmith gyratory was shut after the police car which had its flashing lights on, hit the 71-year-old man who had to be taken to hospital in a critical condition.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman told getwestlondon that while the man was no longer in a critical condition, he is likely to have life-changing injuries as a result of the collision.

His next of kin have been informed.

The collision happened at Hammersmith Broadway near one of the entrances to Hammersmith Tube station at around 6pm on Wednesday (July 12).

The spokesperson said no arrests were made and that the marked police car involved was "travelling on blues and twos at the time of the collision".

Officers from the Road and Transport Teaching Command are investigating the incident.

The Force's Directorate of Professional Standards had been informed "as a matter of course".

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has also been made aware of the incident.

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to call the Metropolitan Police force on 101.
