A fraudster who lied about living in Grenfell Tower to get a shorter sentence for burglary has now been jailed.

Homeless Derrick Peters, 58, was previously spared jail for burglary by falsely telling a judge he had lost all his belongings in the Grenfell fire .

His lies meant he put up in free four-star hotel accommodation worth thousands of pounds, courtesy of Kensington and Chelsea Council .

Now Peters, who pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud and perverting the course of justice, is behind bars.

He was sentenced to total of six years on Friday (August 24) at Isleworth Crown Court .

This includes a three year and four month sentence for two counts of fraud by false representation, 20 months for one count of perverting the course of justice and 12 months after being resentenced for previous count of burglary - all to be be served consecutively.

Following the tragic fatal fire, Peters claimed to have lived in flat 78 of Grenfell Tower and fraudulently claimed free hotel accommodation which racked up a bill of £38,784.

On August 8 2017, Peters was arrested for a burglary offence that was not related to the Grenfell Tower case.

He was sentenced on October 16 2017 following a guilty plea, avoiding a jail term and instead received a community order, and a victim surcharge of £85.

71 people died in the fire that destroyed a North Kensington tower block last year

Peters' defence counsel included his claim to be a victim of the Grenfell Tower tragedy in their mitigation to the judge.

He falsely claimed to have lived with a man who died in the fire and to have lost his best friend and all his possessions.

Peters had been remanded in custody for sentencing for the burglary and was released from prison after he received the community sentence.

Following his release from prison in October 2017, he reapplied for housing through the council and was given a prepaid bank card.

On July 26 this year, he was then charged with fraud and attempting to pervert the course of justice after enquiries revealed Peters' story was false and he had not lived in Grenfell Tower.
