The sports complex which was used as a humanitarian site to support those affected by the Grenfell Tower disaster will host a free community open day.

The special day at Westway Sports & Fitness Centre on August 5 is being held as a way of saying thank-you to the community after it rallied together following the deadly blaze which destroyed the 24-storey building and left at least 80 people dead .

The centre is operated by Everyone Active in partnership with Westway Trust, the charity which owns the sports centre and is responsible for 23 acres of land beneath the Westway flyover, and is promising “something for everyone”.

Fundraising will also take place on the day to raise money for those affected by the fire.

In the immediate aftermath of the blaze, the sports centre was used as a shelter for those affected by the fire.

Its outdoor football pitches were filled with donations as the community and nation rallied together , and it was where the Queen and Prince William visited two days after the disaster.

During the open day the centre will offer free climbing taster sessions , tennis, inflatable football and disability sports sessions, and arts and crafts.

Throughout the day, which runs from 10am to 5pm, the centre will be running gym challenges in the new state-of-the-art fitness suite.

There will be spin classes and a Zumbathon, and HIIT classes.

As well as taking part in sporting activities, younger members of the community will be able to have their face painted, enjoy the bouncy castle and take part in balloon modelling.

They will even be able to meet Chase from the hit television show Paw Patrol as well Everyone Active’s mascot Bee Active.

Throughout the day, the team will be raising money for charity to support those that have been affected by the Grenfell Tower disaster.

“During this difficult time the response and support from our local community has just been amazing and we are looking forward to welcoming everyone through our doors as a way of saying thank-you,” says Everyone Active general manager Ian Ling.

“The community has really come together to support each other and we want to give everyone the opportunity to celebrate the strength of our community and enjoy a day activities together.

“It’s fantastic to be able to invite the community to Westway Sports & Fitness Centre as it gets back to its role as a much valued community sports facility,” he said.

Westway Trust chief executive, Angela McConville , said: “I want to thank Everyone Active and their staff for the dedication to supporting those affected by the Grenfell fire and to minimising the disruption to users of the Centre.

"They stepped up when needed and made a real difference.

“Sport and fitness can play a real part in helping North Kensington to heal following this tragedy and we look forward to working with Everyone Active to ensure that the best facilities and programmes are available to local people.”

A special draw will also take place with a top prize activity hamper worth £3,500 including family membership, sporting equipment, climbing and tennis sessions, a Red Letter Day Voucher and a £500 cheque.
