Kensington and Chelsea Council is expected to have a new leader by July 19.

That is the date of the next full council meeting where members of the council are expected to elect Nick Paget-Brown’s replacement after he announced on Friday (June 30) his intention to stand down.

However, the mechanism is in place for an emergency meeting to be called, which could result in a new leader being chosen on Tuesday (July 11) at the earliest.

Cllr Paget-Brown will remain in charge until his successor has been chosen.

He stepped down amid mounting criticism of his handling of the Grenfell Tower tragedy , which has left at least 80 people dead, and following a rebuke from Downing Street over his handling of a Cabinet meeting held at Kensington Town Hall on Thursday (June 29).

As things stand, the new leader is expected to be elected at the July 19 meeting, but a local authority spokesman said an emergency meeting could take place if called for by six councillors.

That would be held five working days later, meaning if councillors called for the emergency meeting on Monday (July 3), the meeting would take place the following Tuesday (July 11).

At the time of writing, the council had received no demand for an emergency meeting.

Cllr Paget-Brown announced his resignation as council leader one day after controversially halting a cabinet meeting because of the presence of press.
