Fire crew who battled the blaze at Grenfell Tower are struggling to deal with the horrors they saw , according to a firefighter who was at the scene.

Richard Welch said 800 fire and rescue staff had received counselling following the June 14 fire, with 80 still getting help more than three months later.

His comments come after London Fire Brigade (LFB) chief Dany Cotton revealed in August that she had received help following the disaster, which killed at least 80 people.

Commander Welch said on the morning of the fire in Notting Hill that more than 200 staff were seen.

He added: “Since then the counselling and wellbeing service has seen over 600. I’ve been under counselling since Grenfell.

“Whatever help our staff need, we will make sure they get it.”

He said the figures are “positive” as they show those affected are seeking help.

Sean Starbuck, of the Fire Brigades Union , insisted: “Fire services need to create an environment where firefighters feel able to disclose if they are suffering.”
