A graduate has returned to his old college in Hounslow to recruit the apprentices needed for his thriving business.

Billy Shires completed an NVQ in painting and decorating at West Thames College 's Feltham Skills Centre just under a decade ago.

He went on to set up his own business, Southern Elite Decorators, which now has five employees, three sub-contractors and two apprentices.

He turned to Feltham Skills Centre to recruit his first apprentice, painting and decorating student Harry Driver, in 2013.

He was so impressed by the standard of work that he returned in February this year to take on a second apprentice from the centre, Jordan Forrester, who has completed a level one bricklaying course with the college.

A college spokeswoman said: "Strong links with employers mean our students have work experience and apprenticeship opportunities to support their education and training, so it's fantastic to see former students like Billy come back to the college wanting to provide the same opportunities given to them, allowing the next generation to continue the success cycle."

Mr Shires has also teamed up with the college on a sustainability project, donating leftover materials for use by its students and recycling the college's empty paint tins.

And he has invited painting and decorating and carpentry students from the college to get some hands-on experience as volunteers this April when his company renovates Ashford FC's ground, before taking on staff in a friendly football match at the club.

You can learn more about opportunities at Feltham Skills Centre by attending the next open evening there on Wdenesday, March 17, from 5pm-7pm. To register for a place, visit the college website the college website .
