More than 650 British workers at General Electric could be facing unemployment after the company announced it has submitted a proposal to employee representatives following a power division review.

The American conglomerate, which has London-based offices in the Ark in Hammersmith , could be cutting as many as 670 jobs in the UK following the recent review, according to the Telegraph .

This comes as a union source told French newspaper Les Echos that General Electric had presented a proposal of 4,500 job cuts across Europe to the European Works Council.

The GE Power unit, which it was announced in June 2017 will integrate with GE Energy Connections, currently employs more than 1,600 workers in the UK.

In a statement on Wednesday (December 6), a company spokesman told getwestlondon : “General Electric continuously reviews its operations to ensure it is best positioned to grow and serve our customers.

“In June 2017, GE announced the integration of GE Power and GE Energy Connections into one business.

“As a result, we’ve recently announced to our employees our plans for reshaping how our business is structured internally to help respond to our market realities and position the business for long-term success."

He added: “We have shared our high-level plans for the future structure of our business with employees’ representatives.

“We will consult with them as soon as our proposals are at a point we can have a meaningful dialogue, and before any decisions are made, as required by and in accordance with local laws.”

In its report on Tuesday (December 5), Les Echos newspaper cited a union source and said cuts are predicted in Germany, Switzerland and Britain.
