Survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire came together in a show of strength to make happy new memories at the charity match on Saturday (September 2).

Organised by Queens Park Rangers chairman Tony Fernandes, director of football Les Ferdinand and Ferdy Unger- Hamilton of Columbia Records, the trio hoped the game would "inspire hope for those affected".

Survivors joined celebrities and firefighters at Queens Park Rangers' Loftus Road stadium, just a mile from the block in North Kensington.

Nicholas Burton, who escaped from the 19th floor of the burning building, told the Press Association: "We've got a lot of old, tragic memories, today's about making new ones.

"All the families are sitting together.

"We've come together and it's very important we stay as a family. We're a family now."

Mr Burton, 50, laid a wreath before the game, saying it was "about remembering the people who have passed".

He said: "It was very poignant just before the minute's silence. That really brings it down to earth.

"I just feel grateful and blessed to be here. I lived there for 33 years, when you see the dark, ghostly shell it does bring a sadness in your heart."

Fellow survivor Paul Menacer said being given the chance to play "means the world to me".

He said: "Things like this will bring us closer together. Football is a big stress-reliever for me.

"We met people who want to talk and actually care about us.

"Someone as big as Jose Mourinho coming down and talking to us is just an amazing thing, just to be in the same dressing room as him at half-time, such a character."

Grenfell volunteer Omar Salha said he felt shivers of "goose bumps" before scoring a penalty against Jose Mourinho.

He said: "He tried some mind tricks, I'm definitely going to play it back when I get home.

"We will not forget Grenfell - that was part of the team talk.

"We're working to bring some sort of solace to their lives."
