This humorous, if somewhat foul-mouthed, attempt to get dog owners cleaning up after their pets has been turning heads in Hounslow .
The new poster warns owners not to put their foot in it and risk an £80 fine by leaving their dog's muck for an unfortunate soul to step in.
The advert by Hounslow Council features a shoe poised over a pile of dog poo, with the arresting image completing the message: "S**t happens. Deal with it."
The posters have certainly got people talking, with Twitter user @iCylonius hailing them as "brilliant" after spotting one in Feltham High Street.
Hounslow Council tweeted back to say: "Thanks for the feedback. We hope message reduces the amount of dog fouling in the borough."
But one mother was less impressed, describing them as "a bit risqué" after they prompted an awkward moment with her daughter.
'What does it mean pooh happens?'
Writing on the Feltham Community Facebook page, Marina Sharma commented: "Not good for a 5 year old learning to as I experienced the other day when she sounded it out she asked what does it mean 'pooh happens'?"
Like other Facebook users, she questioned how effective the adverts would be at persuading selfish dog owners to clean up after their pooches.
She called for dog licences to be reintroduced, while others said there was a need for more dog waste bins.
'We wanted a campaign that made people stop and think'
Deputy council leader Amrit Mann said: "Reducing dog fouling is one of our corporate priorities. We wanted to create a campaign that made people stop and think about the effects of dog fouling.
"The foul shown is on a poster but all too often people see dog fouling on the streets and in parks. It's disgusting to come across - even worse if you're unfortunate enough to step on it.
"If we catch anyone allowing their dog to foul without cleaning it up we will not hesitate to fine them £80. Let these posters act as a warning to irresponsible dog owners – clean up or pay up."
