A leisure centre is holding a sponsored spin class in support of a fitness instructor's young daughter who is battling cancer.

Jose De Freitas's daughter, Juliana, was only 18-months-old when she was diagnosed with the kidney disease Wilms' tumour last October, and she is due to undergo surgery for a second time in April.

Staff at Isleworth Leisure Centre, where he works, are showing their support by organising a marathon spin class in aid of the cancer charity Momentum.

The 33-year-old, who will lead the spin class, said he was extremely grateful for the support of his fellow employees and pleased he could so something to thank the "amazing" staff at Great Ormond Street and Kingston hospitals, where Juliana has been receiving treatment.

"I'd like to say thank you to all the staff at the leisure centre and the nurses and doctors who have been so good to our family," he told getwestlondon. "It's been a very difficult time but we believe God is helping give us strength, and we're hoping Juliana will be better by summer and all our lives can return to normal."

The father-of-two, who has worked at the leisure centre for seven years, and lives in Hounslow, said they had no idea anything was wrong with Juliana until her diagnosis.

"She seemed fine. Her stomach was a bit larger but we just thought she'd put on some weight, so it came as a big shock when we found out what was wrong," he said.

Juliana had a large tumour removed, along with one of her kidneys, but she needs further surgery after a second tumour was spotted on her liver.

The five-hour spinathon will take place at the leisure centre in Twickenham Road, Isleworth, on Sunday March 29.

More than £700 has already been pledged via the Justgiving page, and there are still spaces available for those wishing to take part.

Leisure centre employees also plan to hold a cycle challenge just for staff in the building's café on April 24.

Proceeds from both events will go to Momentum, which supports the families of children affected by cancer in south-west London and Surrey, organising short breaks and helping make their time in hospital more pleasant.

You can make a donation at Jose's JustGiving page here.

To book a session at the spinathon, lasting between 30 minutes and five hours, call the leisure centre on 0845 456 6675 or pop in.
