The Japanese IT firm Fujitsu announced a significant number of job cuts on Tuesday (October 18), which could affect the firm's base in Hayes .

Fujitsu announced to UK employees that it would be cutting up to 1,800 in the country as part of plans to "streamline operations".

The multinational company employs around 14,000 workers in the UK, many of whom are based at the Hayes hub, Fujitsu Laboratories of Europe

'Transformation programme'

A statement released on Tuesday said: “Fujitsu is planning a transformation programme that will enable it to better support customers in the era of digital transformation.

“Proposed measures include changes which would result in the reduction of up to 1,800 jobs in the UK.

“As part of the programme, Fujitsu plans to streamline operations in order to remain competitive in the market.”

The cuts are not set to be made until 2017 and no locations have been given for where jobs will be lost.

'Commitment to the UK'

Fujitsu recently announced it's commitment to the UK in the wake of the Brexit vote.

The firm was publicly in favour of Britain remaining a part of the European Union , but said they were "committed to the UK whatever the outcome".

According to Fujitsu more details of who will leave the company will be announced in 2017.

A spokesperson added: “All affected employees will be offered guidance and support and Fujitsu is establishing a consultation process with elected employee representatives.”
