Friday the 13th , "unlucky for some", as the saying goes.

Today is the traditional day of bad luck, and it seems there's plenty of you out there who believe Friday the 13th to be unlucky.

Almost three quarters of adults, 74% to be exact, have reported experiencing a stint of bad luck on Friday the 13th.

So it won't come as music to your ears when I reveal that there are two Friday the 13ths in 2017, the second falling in October.

The fear of the day has become so widespread, that it even has its own name, 'Triskaidekaphobia'.

74% of British adults believe Friday the 13th is unlucky

Yes Triskaidekaphobia is the fear of Friday the 13th, and according to a report carried out by Travelodge, 40% of you will even be taking extra measures to avoid bad luck today.

This includes :

  • Avoiding travelling for fear of being involved in an accident or long delays
  • Rescheduling an important meeting
  • Rescheduling a dentist appointment
  • Avoiding making a big purchase like a car or house
  • Avoiding mirrors or ladders

And clearly some people on social media agree with these measures.

The report surveyed 2,500 British adults to find out if certain numbers bring them good or bad luck.

7 is the most popular number and 13, the least most popular

It found that 65% believe that having a lucky number brings them good fortune.

The most popular lucky number is 7, but 50% of adults also said they use their birth date to bring them luck.

Do you believe in Friday the 13th superstitions?

The hotel chain also found that customers requested rooms relating to their lucky numbers, and unsurprisingly number the 13 was found to be the least requested room, especially on Friday the 13th.

Room 101 comes in as second least requested, followed by room 666.

13 was the least most popular number in the survey

Shakila Ahmed from Travelodge said: “Our research shows that Britons certainly believe in the power of numbers and will use their lucky number to get ahead in life and avoid the number 13 at all costs.

"Across our network of 532 UK hotels we have a large number of regular business customers who always request the same room number.”

So if you see someone saying good morning to magpie on your travels, searching for a black cat or even throwing salt over their shoulders, they haven't gone crazy, it's just their own way of dealing with Friday the 13th.
