Four men have been arrested following a pre-planned smash and grab robbery at a jewellery store in Picadilly on Wednesday (August 3).

Met police made the arrests after four Flying Squad officers were injured during the arrest phase of the operation as a gang attempted to flee the scene on two mopeds.

They had smashed the windows of the store and attempted to steal a quantity of jewellery, before Flying Squad officers moved in to arrest them.

Four men then attempted to flee the scene on two mopeds and a taser was discharged a number of times by Fying Squad officers.

Three of the officers suffered minor injuries by the fourth is in hospital in a serious condition.

The four suspects were arrested on suspicion of robbery and have been taken to central London police stations.

One of the suspects reported being unwell after he was booked in to custody, and has been transferred to hospital.

An axe, knives and the stolen jewellery were all recovered at the scene.

"They know that this work carries with it very real risks and dangers but take this in their stride as part of serving the public.

"However, today's events highlight how the reckless behaviour of those determined to evade justice, heedless of the consequences, can have a real impact on all those involved."
