A retired teacher at a Northwood private school has been spared an immediate jail term after he was sentenced for making indecent images of children.

Barry Abraham, of Gerard Gardens, Pinner , appeared at Isleworth Crown Court on Thursday (April 28) charged with six counts of making an indecent photograph/pseudo image of a child.

The 57-year-old, who retired from teaching at St Martin's Preparatory School in Northwood - attended by children aged three to 13 years old - in 2013, was sentenced to 16 months' imprisonment.

But he had his sentence suspended for two years, meaning he will not go to jail if he does not offend again during this period. He is also to undergo a 12-month sex offender's treatment programme.

Police confirmed the charges did not relate to any pupils at the school.

Abraham had previously pleaded guilty to the offence at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court on March 30.

Detective Constable Helen Inder, of the Metropolitan Police Service's Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command, said: "I hope the fact that Barry Abraham has been held to account will give victims of sexual abuse the confidence to come forward and speak with police."

David Tidmarsh, Headmaster of St Martin’s Northwood, said: "We were aware of the charges being brought against Mr Abraham.

"While none of the offences involved St Martin’s pupils nor were conducted on the school’s premises or using school equipment, Mr Abraham was a teacher at the school until he retired in 2013.

"As such we have been fully cooperating with the Police during their investigations and continually review our recruitment and vetting procedures, which were rated ‘excellent’ following our most recent ISI inspection."

Earlier this year, a West Drayton man who worked at a Surrey nursery was also given a suspended sentence after police found a haul of shocking extreme pornography.
