A woman from Hounslow who trained as a nurse during the Second World War celebrated her 100th birthday at the weekend.

Vera Ward was surrounded by family and friends who gathered to mark the milestone with a party at Southall Baptist Church in Southall last Saturday (October 29).

Ms Ward, who turned 100 on Sunday (October 30), was whisked away in a Rolls Royce from her flat in Gloucester Road to attend church on the day.

She has Hounslow running through her veins having lived and worked in the borough for decades.

Vera Ward was delighted to receive her card from The Queen

The hardworking grandmother who trained as a nurse during the war went on to work at West Middlesex Hospital in Isleworth as a nurse for many years.

She continued well past the retirement age as a part-time nurse until she finally gave up her overalls aged 75.

Since then she has remained active in her social life attending church, a senior citizens groups and a needlework class, to name a few.

Ms Ward was thrilled to receive her card from The Queen and enjoyed the weekend birthday celebrations.

Niece Judith Stelfox said: "She still lives in her own flat with a little help from her friends and family and enjoys an active social life attending church, Bible study group, senior citizens group, and a needlework class regularly."
