Plans to transform the disused Feltham Ex-Servicemen's Club into new extra care housing for vulnerable people in the borough has been given the green light.

Hounslow council has approved a project to build 94 "extra care" apartments for adults with dementia, learning disabilities and physical disabilities in Hounslow.

Work has begun at the site, starting with the demolition of the former venue in Bedfont Lane.

Along with housing, the development will come with a range of communal facilities and amenities including lounges, hairdressing salon, dining area, laundry room and meeting space.

Developers Willmott Partnership Homes is aiming for a project completion date in spring 2018.

The idea behind Extra Care Housing scheme is to provide tenants with a home for life where they can live independently and mix with others.

The site will have professional and support staff on hand 24 hours a day to help as and when required.

The scheme is part of the council's plans to provide 400 new council homes across the borough, in addition to creating a further 180 extra care housing units by 2018/19.

Plans put to a public consultation in December last year also included a majority of one-bedroom apartments and some two-bedroom apartments; gardens; restaurant; Internet café and an ambulance bay.

Councillor Steve Curran, leader of Hounslow council said: “This is such an exciting project and demonstrates the commitment Hounslow Council has to providing the borough’s older and vulnerable people with top class facilities.

“By providing good quality homes we are bringing a new quality of life; especially for people who require physical adaptations to their homes and care where they live.

"For friends and family, they also have the comfort and reassurance of knowing that help is on the doorstep as and when required.”
