A food bank in Hounslow is receiving 50 requests a day from people on the breadline in the run up to Christmas, an MP has said.

Ruth Cadbury visited Hounslow Community FoodBox's base at Brickfield Community Centre, Brentford , to see the work being done by volunteers.

The Brentford & Isleworth MP said the food bank had received food donations worth £3,000 in December and had delivered more than 300 Christmas hampers packed by staff from local firms GSK and Pernod Richard.

But she added that it was getting an average of 50 requests a day and the demand showed no signs of abating.

"The Hounslow Community FoodBox is an invaluable service for so many families this year," she said.

"It is a sad but inevitable fact that the numbers of people needing food banks is growing year on year and more needs to be done to support low income households.

"Nobody deserves to be hungry and no parent should have to sacrifice their dinner so that their children can eat.

"The kindness displayed by the community through donations has been heart-warming and the donated gifts will put smiles on the faces of so many children who would have gone without this Christmas."
