A young man has been handed a suspended sentence after exposing himself to a woman travelling on the Bakerloo Line on the London Underground.

Vodzhan Ilievski, 20, was given a three-month sentence, suspended for a year, at Highbury Magistrates' Court on Tuesday (August 9).

He was ordered to pay £200 in compensation to the victim and £620 in court costs.

The incident, which took place on August 24 last year, saw Ilievski sit next to a woman travelling on her own on the tube from Paddington station before staring at her and touching himself inappropriately.

The victim was intimidated by his actions and became frightened.

She left the tube four stops later at Queen's Park station in tears.

British Transport Police reviewed CCTV footage of the incident which led to Ilievski's arrest.

The 20-year-old from Valentines Road in Ilford has previously been found guilty of exposure.

Investigating officer PC Les Dunnett said: “I am pleased that Ilievski has been brought to justice.

"The nature and circumstances of this offence made it clear that Ilievski thought it acceptable to target a lone female, when the train had come to a temporary stop in a tunnel and when she had no one to turn to.

“We will treat all offences of this nature extremely seriously and encourage anyone who has been a victim, or sees someone acting inappropriately, to get in touch immediately.

"We will listen and we will work tirelessly to bring the offender to justice.”

The Report It to Stop It campaign has seen a rise in the number of people reporting sexual offences on London's transport network.

Siwan Hayward, TfL’s deputy director of enforcement and on-street operations, added: “No one should be made to feel intimidated or frightened while travelling and I commend this woman for coming forward.

“We strongly urge anyone who is made to feel uncomfortable while travelling to report it immediately and be confident that, alongside BTP, we will take swift action.”
