Around 35 firefighters were called to a blaze at a restaurant and a flat in Hammersmith on Tuesday (August 9).

A total of six engines from London Fire Brigade were called to the scene in Fulham Palace Road after part of the ground floor and an extraction system at Hooked Fish Bar caught fire at around 10.30am.

One witness said fire fighters forced their way into the flats above the restaurant.

He said: "There was a fire at the chip shop. No one was hurt. They evacuated the flats upstairs.

They had to force entry. They had to check if anyone was in there in case the fire spread."

Staff from Truth coffee shop next door were waiting outside.

They said: "We could smell something really funny. We thought something was burning.

"It got really smokey. Firefighters told us to leave."

The road has been closed off to traffic while the fire service tackle the blaze and hose reels could be seen across the road, leading into the building.

Police in Hammersmith have taken to Twitter to urge motorists to avoid the area.

Fire crews from Hammersmith, Kensington and Chelsea fire stations are on the scene.
