A grass fire on Hounslow Heath has prompted a warning for people to take care when using the nature reserve.

A hectare of scrubland - equivalent to around one-and-a-half football pitches - was scorched on Wednesday (August 31) afternoon.

London Fire Brigade was called to the north-west corner of the heath, off Frampton Road, Hounslow, at 3.52pm.

Four crews from Heston and Feltham fire stations attended the blaze, which took just over an hour to bring under control.

The cause of the fire is not known but Paul Taylor, chairman of the Friends of Hounslow Heath, said it should serve as a warning for visitors to take care.

"Barbecues are banned on the heath and smokers should take care to ensure their cigarettes are properly extinguished," he said.

"This could have been much worse, and we need to do everything we can to protect this amazing asset."

Along with discarded cigarettes and barbecues, empty bottles, which focus the sun's rays, are a major cause of grass fires.

The blaze on Hounslow Heath comes just a fortnight after grass fires in Feltham damaged around five hectares of land between them.
