Firefighters tackled a blaze at a house in Hanwell after a neighbour saw smoke coming from the roof and raised the alarm.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers from Ealing, Acton, Heston and Southall fire stations were called to Montague Avenue shortly before 7.30pm on Tuesday (May 19) and spent nearly an hour fighting the flames.

Watch manager Matt Alexander, who was at the scene, said: "When fire crews turned the corner they could see the roof was well alight.

"Firefighters had to work really quickly to stop the fire spreading to the first floor and managed to confine it to the roof, which was badly damaged by the blaze.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
