West London has the dumbest learner drivers in Britain, according to new research.

Figures released by the DVLA show that only 42.8% of people taking their theory test at the Uxbridge test centre in April to June this year managed to pass.

That is the lowest rate in the country and well behind the national average of 49%.

Of the 8,712 total tests in the time period, only 3,729 managed to pass.

The female pass rate was higher than men, with 44.1% compared to 41.6%, yet was still below national average.

Ilford, Luton, Kings Lynn, Boston, Bradford, Scunthorpe, Birmingham, Oldham and Berwick, in Northumberland, were the other nine places with the worst theory-test pass rates.

At the other end of the scale, Scotland and Wales appear to have the brainiest learners.

The Lerwick test centre in the Shetlands had a pass rate of 57.1% from April to June - the best in Britain. Cheltenham was second, with Aberystwyth, in Wales, in third.

Edinburgh, Exeter, Dundee, Inverness, Cheltenham, Cambridge and Newcastle made up the rest of the top 10.

Across Britain as a whole, 463,695 tests were taken, with 227,361 people managing to pass.

More than half of women (50.5%) were successful, compared to just 47.6% of men.

Centres which had fewer than 100 tests from April to June were excluded from the analysis.
