Feltham prison is the second most violent jail for staff in the country, the latest figures from the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) have revealed.

With 138 assaults on guards and other people working at the facility in 2014, the Feltham Young Offenders Institute is one of the most dangerous of any prison in England and Wales.

The number of attacks at the prison, in Bedfont Road, is slightly fewer than the 141 recorded in 2013 - the highest of any year since 2006.

This means, on average, there is an attack around every two to three days at the west London prison.

The MoJ statistics also showed Feltham prison is a dangerous place for both prisoners and staff with 526 incidents of prisoner-on-prisoner violence in 2014 - second only to Glen Parva, in Leicestershire.

However, the most dangerous prison in the country for staff was Altcourse, in Merseyside, which recorded 150 assaults.

Nationally, figures showed violence against prison staff has risen to its highest levels since records began in 2000.

There were 3,637 attacks on workers at prisons in England and Wales in 2014 - or 10 every day.

Other prisons with particularly high figures include Pentonville and Thameside, both also in London.
