Brent and Westminster motorists were among the top 10 worst areas in the country where untaxed vehicles were seized last year

Drivers in Brent are the worst culprits when it comes to being clamped for failing to tax their vehicles in west London - and third across the country.

Exclusive figures obtained by getwestlondon reveal one in every 140 registered motors in the borough was clamped in 2016.

Data shows 808 untaxed vehicles were clamped or impounded by Brent Council last year.

Completing the top three list in west London, is Ealing where the council seized 90 vehicles of the streets last year.

That works out as one per every 1,428 licensed vehicles in the area.

Data across England and Wales revealed there were 32,316 untaxed vehicles clamped or impounded by councils and police forces last year.

Southend-on-Sea was the clamping capital of the country with one vehicle in every 84 clamped, followed by Manchester, Brent, Nottingham and Basildon, competing the top five list.

In addition, the agency’s national wheel-clamping contractor carried out 105,878 more enforcements, for a total of 138,194 untaxed vehicles clamped or impounded.

A release fee of £200 plus payment of a vehicle tax is required to get your car back.

The data comes following a Freedom of Information request to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority.
