A former Chelsea footballer has won the Lotto jackpot and scooped £5.5m.

Terry Bradbury was in the same side as Terry Venables and Jimmy Greaves when he played for the Stamford Bridge outfit in the 1950s and '60s, earning just £25 a week.

Now the granddad says he will be able to provide financial security for his four children and buy a villa in Spain with his lottery winnings.

The ex-midfielder, who collected his cheque from the Saturday (July 4) draw, with wife Ann, said: “The news really is still sinking in. We still can’t quite believe it.”

The 74-year-old began his career with Chelsea in 1957 and made 29 appearances for the First Division club.

The couple usually play the same numbers in the Lotto every week, but they scooped the jackpot after they changed to a Lucky Dip.

Mr Bradbury, who lives in Buxton, Derbyshire, said: “We just felt like a change so threw two Lucky Dip lines on - and we are so glad we did.

“We will definitely be continuing to play Lotto - and will probably stick with Lucky Dips too.”

Mrs Bradbury said: “It is wonderful to think that none of our children will have a mortgage or any stress for the rest of their lives.

"This win provides our family with security and this is what pleases Terry and myself more than anything.”

Mr Bradbury went on to play for Southend, Leyton Orient, Wrexham and Chester during his career.
