Christmas is a time for family and friends, and if you plan on travelling this holiday season, you may want to check your transport route before you travel.

We've broken down each day to highlight the difficulties you may face if you choose to travel and how you can avoid it.

Thursday December 24 (Christmas Eve)

Tube: There will be a normal service on the Tube until 8pm, after which there will be fewer trains running.

The last trains will run on a Sunday service, with Waterloo and City line closing at 11.15pm.

Bus: Buses will run a Saturday or enhanced Saturday service, with the main change being that 24 hour services will finish at midnight.

Overground: Services will run as normal, until 9pm where there will be fewer trains.

Friday December 25 (Christmas Day)

There will be no transport services on Christmas Day, apart from Santander Cycle Hire and Taxi's, which will incur an additional £4 charge.

Saturday December 26 (Boxing Day)

Tube: A Sunday service will run, starting an hour later than usual.

Due to planned engineering works, there will be no service between Baker Street and Aldgate on the Metropolitan Line.

There will be no service from Hammersmith to Tower Hill via Kings Cross on the Circle Line.

There will also be no service from Hammersmith to Aldgate East on the Hammersmith & City Line.

Rail replacement bus services will be operating.

Bus: All routes will run a Sunday service, with 24 hour routes starting at 6am.

Overground: There will be no service.

Sunday December 27

Will you be braving the Tube this festive season?

Tube: Normal Sunday service, with the Boxing Day engineering works still taking place.

Bus: Normal Sunday service will run, on all day, 24 hour and night routes.

Overground: It will run a Saturday-frequency service, but some train times may change.

Monday December 28 (Bank Holiday)

Tube: A Saturday service will run, with the Boxing Day engineering works still taking place.

Bus: A normal Saturday service will run.

Overground: A Saturday frequency service will run, with no service between Richmond and Willesden Junction due to planned engineering works.

Tuesday December 29

Tube: A Saturday service will run, with the Boxing Day engineering works still taking place.

Bus: A Saturday or enhanced Saturday service will run, with a normal weekday service on night and 24-hour buses.

Overground: A Saturday frequency service will run, with no service between Richmond and Willesden Junction due to planned engineering works.

Wednesday December 30

Tube: A Saturday service will run, with the Boxing Day engineering works still taking place.

Bus: A normal Saturday service will run.

Overground: A Saturday frequency service will run, with no service between Richmond and Willesden Junction due to planned engineering works.

Thursday December 31 (New Year's Eve)

Are you going to watch the New Year's Eve fireworks?

Tube: A normal Saturday service will run until 2.30pm, where a revised service will be implemented to manage New Year's Eve congestion.

Bus: A Saturday or enhanced Saturday service will run.

Overground: A Saturday frequency service will run, with no service between Richmond and Willesden Junction due to planned engineering works.

Friday January 1 (New Year's Day)

Tube: A Saturday service will run, with a revised service for the Metropolitan Line.

Bus: A Sunday service will run on all day, 24-hour and night routes.

Overground: A Saturday frequency service will run, but will start later than usual and some train times may change.

Normal travel services resume from Saturday, January 2, apart from planned engineering works.

Alternative ways to get around

Cycle: Santander Cycles will be available all day. Follow @SantanderCycles for real-time information.

Walk:Google Maps can offer the best advice for walking from place to place. You can also find a handy map that shows how many calories you would burn walking between each Tube stop.

Taxi: Uber and Black Cabs will be available throughout the day and night but there’s an extra charge of £4 for taxi (black cab) journeys made between 8pm on Thursday 24 December and 6am on Sunday, December 27.
