A life-sized sculpture in memory of a former leader of Westminister Council will be unveiled next week.

Eric Pickles, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, will perform the unveiling at Merchant Square, a waterfront development in Paddington, on Thursday September 11.

The statue is of Sir Simon Milton who led Westminster City Council between 2000 and 2008 and went on to serve Boris Johnson went as his chief of staff and Deputy Mayor for Policy and Planning, until his untimely death in 2011. During this time, he played a pivotal role in facilitating the regeneration of Paddington Basin, one of the largest development projects in central London.

The bronze sculpture created by Bruce Denny has been placed on a bench in the amphitheatre at Merchant Square.

The installation of the sculpture is the latest stage of the development along with the completion of a moving footbridge designed by Knight Architects over the Grand Union Canal and 3 Merchant Square, a development of 159 luxury private apartments and 42 affordable apartments.

Eric Pickles will perform the unveiling at 4.30pm on September 11.
