Elvis the cat has fought a few battles but wants somewhere to rest and lick his war wounds

We’ve all got scars of some sort, except some are more visible than others.

Elvis looks as though he’s fought a few battles in the past – not surprising as he was found as a stray on the streets of Brixton where, in order to survive, he probably quickly learnt to defend himself.

He’s been a resident at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home for two weeks now and staff say he gobbles up food as though there’s no tomorrow.

Although he can be a bit worried, he loves a fuss and head-butts you for attention.

In the musical Les Misérables, Éponine knew about the perils of street life.

Samantha Barks, the actress who has played Éponine in both the stage and 2012 film version, is a frequent visitor to Battersea and is appealing for more foster carers to help their vulnerable animals.

The actress has, herself, fostered Battersea’s dogs who need time away from kennels. Last year volunteer foster carers helped 597 dogs but more carers are needed.

Volunteers wanted

Battersea is looking for foster carers with compassion and empathy who have time to be a full-time carer.

They should preferably have experience of working with dogs and enthusiasm for training and behavioural work.

Any children should be older than 10.

Foster carers need to live within two hours journey time of one of Battersea’s three sites in London, Old Windsor or Brands Hatch as they may have to travel to those sites for medical and rehoming meetings.

If your experience is with cats rather than dogs, Battersea also want foster homes for cats/kittens.

In return, foster carers get training in dog /cat behaviour, regular contact with Battersea’s volunteer team and knowledge they are helping some of London’s most vulnerable animals - and helping their scars heal.

Midsummer fete

If you’ve got scars that need healing, a soothing visit to Kew Midsummer Fete on Saturday June 18 (11am – 6pm) could be in order.

Whilst there, look out for Hounslow Animal Welfare Society who will be amongst 110 stallholders attending this popular event.

Taking place on Kew Green, near the Thames, it sounds rather idyllic.
