The Member of Parliament for Uxbridge and South Ruislip has given his congratulations to the newly elected President of the United States, Donald Trump.

After a turbulent election period Mr Trump defeated rival Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton to become the 45th President.

The Republican candidate and businessman will be sworn into office on Friday January 20, 2017 when current President Barack Obama will officially step down.

Mr Johnson, who was recently appointed to Prime Minister Theresa May 's cabinet as Foreign Secretary, said he is "much looking forward to working" with Donald Trump and his administration.

The former Mayor of London tweeted at around 10am on Wednesday (November 9).

“Congratulations to Donald Trump and much looking forward to working with his administration on global stability and prosperity,” he said.

He added: “I believe passionately in the importance of the UK – US relationship and am confident we can take it forward together.”

Prime Minister Theresa May has also reacted, saying: “I would like to congratulate Donald Trump on being elected the next President of the United States, following a hard-fought campaign.

“Britain and the United States have an enduring and special relationship based on the values of freedom, democracy and enterprise.

“We are, and will remain, strong and close partners on trade, security and defence.

“I look forward to working with President-elect Donald Trump, building on these ties to ensure the security and prosperity of our nations in the years ahead."
