An early 19th century building in Hanwell will be converted into a nursery.

Bunny Park Nursery has been chosen by Ealing Council as the preferred bidder to redevelop Brent Lodge Stables at 135 Church Road.

The nursery, which needs to expand, will restore and refurbish the building over two years in a project costing £320,000.

In exchange for the redevelopment the nursery, which has been running for 29 years, will be given a 40-year lease by the council and will also landscape the grounds - providing a garden and play area.

The council said the nursery was chosen over other bidders because of its offer to retain the building for community use.

Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, cabinet member for transport, environment and leisure, said: "The council is determined to find a way to preserve Brent Lodge Stables’ future and keep it, as much as possible, for the benefit of the community.

"The plans from Bunny Park Nursery will both restore and respect the stables’ historic features and sustain its usefulness to the community in the longterm.

"I am delighted that we have a real win-win here by maintaining an important historic building and bringing in a great new facility to the park, which will support local families."

The decision comes after the council invited bidders to redevelop the building in 2014 because it could not afford to restore it.

Brent Lodge Stables was built in the early 19th century and is a grade II building in a conservation area.

Its condition was considered so poor that English Heritage placed it on the "at risk" register.

Alina Balysz, owner of Bunny Park Nursery, said: "After many years of visiting the park and observing the stables we had a vision that the building would be an excellent venue for a children's nursery.

"The environment of the park and animal centre provides an ideal place for children to learn and develop.

"We are all very excited to be given the opportunity to provide such a much-needed service to the community."

Bunny Park Nursery is located on the nearby Manor Court Road in Hanwell.
