A total of 40 people fled a burning block of flats in West Drayton , after the roof of the building caught fire.

Four fire engines, 21 firefighters and police officers were called to a roof fire, on St Stephens Road in Yiewsley , West Drayton, on Tuesday night (May 24).

The brigade were called at 7.55pm to find that part of the roof of a four storey block, containing shops on Yiewsley High Street as well as the flats, were damaged by the blaze.

Around 10 people had fled the property before the arrival of the fire brigade, and a further 30 residents were evacuated from the third and fourth floors, by fire crews wearing breathing apparatus.

The fire brigade were called to St Stephen's Road, off Yiewsley High Street

Firefighters had blaze under control in one hour, at 8.55pm.

Fire crews from Hillingdon , Heathrow and Hendon fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
