David Cameron has hailed a volunteer for helping hundreds of children grow their gardening skills.

The prime minister praised Peter Edwards for "enriching" the lives of youngsters at The Rosary Catholic Primary School, in Heston , where he runs a gardening club.

The 82-year-old has ploughed huge amounts of his time into running the club since losing his wife six years ago, helping at least 400 children take their first steps in horticulture.

His flourishing efforts have been recognised with a Points of Light award, which honours shining examples of volunteering across the country.

He is the 394th UK winner of the accolade, which is modelled on the Points of Light programme started by George HW Bush in the USA.

"Peter has given a huge amount of his time to enriching the lives of pupils at The Rosary Roman Catholic Primary School," said Mr Cameron.

"Through the gardening club he runs he has not only given hundreds of children an opportunity they may not otherwise have to get involved in gardening, he uses it to bring history, science and a wide range of other topics to life.

"The memorial garden he has created is a wonderful space for everyone who visits the school to enjoy, and I am delighted to recognise Peter as a Point of Light."

Mr Edwards was earlier this year named School Gardening Champion of the Year by the Royal Horticultural Society.

Without his dedication, many of the children he has helped would not get the chance to learn about growing plants as they do not have access to gardens at home.

"I've come to the view that giving in life is a bonus in itself"

He helped the children design and plant a memorial garden for both pupils who have passed away and those killed in conflicts past and present, which was opened on Armistice Day last year.

"I've wanted to work with children all my life, but sadly didn't have that opportunity until my dearest wife passed away," he said.

"I've come to the view that giving in life is a bonus in itself, so I’m very overwhelmed to receive this award from the prime minister."

Feltham & Heston MP Seema Malhotra also praised his work at the school.

"It's a real example of how, quite literally, we will be able to reap from the seeds that Peter has sewn in terms of gardening and community volunteering," she said.

"This award is richly deserved and I am sure all in the community will join me in congratulating him."
