Dashcam footage taken by police officers stresses the importance of watching out for red X lanes when driving down the M25 and M3.

Basically, if you see the giant X light up, that means you should move out of that lane, fast.

This is very important because in an event of an emergency, quick response vehicles can speed down the empty lane without having to swerve in and out of traffic.

This means a quicker response and, ultimately, traffic moving again sooner following an accident - makes sense, right?

But many unruly motorists ignore the huge flashing Xs.

Surrey Police has hit out at these drivers by posting dashcam footage showing the importance of obeying these rules.

Surrey Road Cops vented frustration on Twitter after being slowed down responding to a collision between junctions 2 and 3 on the M3 due to four drivers ignoring the signs.

On Sunday evening (September 10) the force posted: "Dealing with Multi vehicle non injury RTC on the M3 just before Junction 2 from 3. Shame the 4 out of hundreds of other vehicles ignored.

"The quicker emergency services and highways can get to the scene the quicker we can clear the road.

"Do not ignore the signs and red x's."

The Surrey Roads Policing Unit later posted dashcam footage showing officers whizzing down an empty lane past rows of traffic.

"This is a great example of the red X working as it should," they said.

"Great driving by everyone in lane 1 - 3."

If you do not move out of a closed lane which has a large red X above it, not only could you be obstructing a quick response, you could also be fined.

Surrey Road Cops teased that they will soon be enforcing the red X signs with the static speed cameras on the motorway.
