Police are investigating a mobile phone snatch in Piccadilly which was captured on camera by a passing black taxi.

The footage shows two people on a moped run through a red light and snatch the device out of the hands of a pedestrian waiting to cross.

The theft happened on Thursday (April 27) and was captured on the dash cam of cabbie Rock Hunter.

Police from Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster are now investigating.

Mr Hunter, a London taxi driver for nearly 20 years, was driving at 4.55pm when he stopped at traffic lights at the junction with Albemarle Street.

To his left a moped with a pillion passenger also stops at the red lights, and moments later a man in a suit stands at the junction too.

The moped immediately pulls up beside the victim before the passenger brazenly grabs the phone, before the moped drives through the red lights and turns right into St James’s Street.

Their bewildered victim is left rooted to the spot for a short while before jogging across the road in the direction of the moped.

The moped runs a red light and turns right moments after swiping the phone of a pedestrian, seen on the left with his hand out

The footage has been viewed by Met Police and passed on to officers from Kensington and Chelsea, who are investigating.

According to comments left on Twitter, another cabbie says the same guys pulled a similar stunt in Knightsbridge , while Mr Hunter claims the person captured on film was the 20th person to be targeted that day.

Westminster Police has also asked Mr Hunter to contact one of its officers.
