Several people are dead and more than 50 are injured after a tram derailed and overturned in south London this morning.

The horrific incident, involving a two-car vehicle, occurred in a tunnel in Croydon shortly after 6am, a Transport for London spokesman said.

Five people were left trapped after the crash, while dozens of others were rushed to three local hospitals - some with serious injuries.

One man said his panicked wife called him to say she was stuck and 'couldn't get up'.

More than 70 firefighters are currently at the scene of the disaster, where they have cut three of the trapped victims from the wreckage so far.

At a press conference this morning, the British Transport Police said there has been some ‘loss of life’, but that it is 'too early to confirm numbers'.

The cause of the crash is currently unknown.
