Hundreds of people descended on Acton Green Common to join the start of a fortnight of arts and community events as part of the Bedford Park Festival.

In its 49th year, the two-day Green Days fete and craft fair, was opened by Chiswick resident and BBC journalist, broadcaster and author, Fergal Keane, who commended "this extraordinary community in Chiswick" during his speech at the event on Saturday (June 13).

In the largest turn-out to date as people flocked to the craft stalls selling everything from antiques, jewellery and porcelain to sculptures and cards, while there was fun and games in the children's corner plus entertainment from Beverley Stone, The Brent Jazz Orchestra and The Chiswick Scottish country dancers.

Dance team member and Chiswick Scottish chairman, Michael Nolan, said: “This was a real opportunity for us to play our part in the Chiswick community where we meet as a club.

"The Chiswick people seem to have really enjoyed our dancing and we were impressed by their enthusiasm and ‘have a go’ attitude.

"The team, which is drawn from members of the club, have had a great time too.”

Several other local celebrities who took part in the Green Days weekend included chef and cookery writer Allegra McEvedy, who judged the Great Green Days Bake-Off, and broadcaster and food writer Lucy McDonald, of Crumbs TV, who was one of the judges of the Jam and Chutney-Making competition.

The two-week festival packed with poetry evenings, art exhibits and talks, put on by the St Michael's and All Angels church, will run until June 28.

It will raise funds for Mr Keane's charity Mssada, which helps victims of the Rwandan genocide; The Upper Room, who feed and support the community in need in west London; and The Mulberry Centre in Isleworth, which provides advice and support to all those affected by cancer and St Michael’s Organ and Parish Rooms Appeal.

The fortnight will culminate in the Festival Mass at the church and the Bedford Park Open Gardens.
