A car park in Harrow ,which had become an “eyesore as a dumping ground for household waste and furniture”, has become the latest area to receive a deep clean as part of the council's push for clean and tidy streets.

Harrow Council’s chief executive Michael Lockwood and senior officers in the environment team saw the problem in the car park on Cambridge Road first hand during a ward tour in October 2015, with local residents and Headstone North Ward councillors raising it with the council’s Blitz Team.

In response, the Blitz Team has cleaned up the car park area; removing fly tipped waste, litter picking, grass cutting and given a general tidy-up.

To help keep the area tidy and make it less attractive to fly-tippers, new preventative measures have reportedly been put in place.

The car park is now covered by CCTV, to help prosecute locals who use the area to dump their waste.

The council says they are working closely with residents on Cambridge Road and has provided better bins to a development of flats nearby.

They said they hope everyone in the area will continue to work together to maintain the area’s cleanliness.

Cllr Graham Henson, portfolio holder for environment, crime & community safety, visited the car park as the clean-up began. He said: “We understand how important it is for our residents to have clean and tidy streets. It’s what makes an area a pleasant place to live, work, and visit.

“This is why we are carrying out our deep cleans of the worst affected areas.

“In Harrow we are taking a tough stance against anyone who throws rubbish on our streets.

“We already issue £75 Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) to those caught dropping litter and we will seek to prosecute anyone caught dumping rubbish illegally.

“By working together with our residents, we can not only make our borough look better but can also save huge amounts of council time and money that we’d prefer were put to much better use.

“If you see illegally dumped rubbish please report this to us and we’ll remove this within 24 hours.”

The Blitz Team have also reportedly been busy in the last week in Headstone North Ward clearing leaves, litter and other detritus on neighbouring roads.
