Green-fingered people living in White City Estate will be able to see the fruits of their labour later this year after helping plant an orchard.

Residents and volunteers from Hammersmith Community Gardens Association (HCGA) planted the small community orchard in a disused plot opposite opposite QPR’s Loftus Road stadium in December.

The project – funded by the Big Local initiative – saw a mixture of apple and pear trees, including a new variety called Core Blimey, which was propagated by the Urban Orchard Project, planted outside Mackay House.

HCGA is a local environmental charity that manages two community gardens and two food-growing projects, and works extensively with school in the area.

“This is just one of the small green projects we are working on across White City Estate ,” said Liz Clark, HCGA project co-ordinator.

“We are always looking to get more residents involved so do let us know if you have any ideas about how your neighbourhood could be improved.”
