Hundreds of people enjoyed the Westway Trust’s Christmas festival at Portobello Green.

The two-day event took place on Wednesday and Thursday (December 9 and 10) and also featured Father Christmas, reindeer, market stalls and mulled wine.

The Ebony Steel Band, The Rugby Portobello Trust and The Rhythm Studio entertained visitors with music.

Among those with a stall was Steph Fernandes, who suffers from several chronic illnesses but was able to use the festival to sell Christmas gifts. She said: “Most of the things I sold on my stall were handmade which was physically very challenging to do but it was something I really enjoyed.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the festival. The staff were amazing and the community really enjoyed it. It was also so nice to be out of the house as normally I am quite isolated at home.”

The Christmas festival followed a late-night shopping event in the Portobello Green arcade .

This saw all the independent designers in the arcade come together for an opportunity for shoppers to pick up unique gifts as well as watch performances from a local choir and burlesque performer Didi Derriere.

Talking after the festival Angela McConville, Westway Trust chief executive, said: “There was a terrific atmosphere under the canopy at the Christmas festival as musicians, local businesses and stall holders, families and Trust staff came together to kick off the festive season.

“It was fantastic to see the children’s excitement as they waited for Santa and met his reindeer. I was particularly impressed by the talented young performers from around the area.”
