It is one of the busiest weekends on our roads with more people than usual taking to the roads to make their way home for Christmas .

But with some roads closed to facilitate events and others to make way for emergency works, you could run into some delays.

Here's our guide to road closures in west London over the festive period.

Twickenham

Roads surrounding Twickenham stadium will be closed on Tuesday, December 27 due to a rugby match at the stadium.

Motorists should be warned that the area is expected to be populated by large numbers of pedestrians both before and after the match.

The Harlequins are hosting Gloucester with a kick off time of 4pm and traffic levels are expected to increase before and after the match.

London Road, Whitton Road and Rugby Road will be closed and diversions will be in place.

Avoid the A316 Chertsey Road if possible, as delays are expected.

South Kensington

The road is closed to facilitate work on a burst water main

Emergency works are being carried out until December 29 following a burst water main on Wednesday, December 21.

The A3218 Old Brompton Road eastbound, at the junction of Bute Street will be closed.

Hounslow

Vicarage Farm Road is closed at the junction of Great West Road in Hounslow to facilitate works.

Motorists are being warned to expect delays in the area, with temporary traffic lights on Great West Road also in operation at the junction.

The works will be in place until January 21.

Hanwell

Expect delays on the A4020 Uxbridge Road in all directions at the junction of Boston Road in Hanwell due to works facilitating a major borough street scheme.

Transport for London (TfL) warns of delays until September 1 2017.

Green Park

The roads will be closed until February 28

Constitution Hill, Spur Road and Link Road within St James' Park are closed to facilitate an event.

The Mall is also closed at Marlborough Road.

Motorists are advised that Birdcage Walk is closed eastbound, but open westbound at Buckingham Gate.

The roads will remain closed until Tuesday, February 28.

Chiswick

TfL continue to warn of possible delays in both directions on the A406 Gunnersbury Avenue at the junction of Power Road in Chiswick .

It is due to the closure of Power Road for continuing bridge replacement works.

Works began in June this year and will continue until December 31.

Hammersmith

Motorists should expect delays on Hammersmith bridge.

The A306 at the bridge has a new weight limit imposed. Due to safety reasons, only one bus can cross the bridge at a time.

Delays will continue until the bridge is fully refurbished, which is expected to be by Saturday, December 31.

Knightsbridge

Work continues until April 2019 during the redevelopment of 55-91 Knightsbridge .

It is affecting the A4 in Knightsbridge in both directions between Wilton Place and William Street and the westbound bus lane is closed.

Motorists should expect delays in the area.

Paddington

The road will be closed until December 30

Motorists could face delays in Paddington over the Christmas period due to National Rail works on Westbourne Bridge.

The slip roads on the A40 Westway, eastbound at the junction of the A404 Harrow Road will be closed from Christmas Eve until December 30.

Westbourne Bridge will also be closed in both directions between Orsett Terrace and the A404 Harrow Road.
