Who knew this shy-looking girl in a pink tutu would grow up to become Honey G - the foul-mouthed rapper from Harrow whom X Factor fans have taken to their hearts.

These childhood snaps of the woman behind those sunglasses reveal the remarkable transformation of the woman behind those sunglasses.

The artist, whose real name is Anna Gilford, grew up in Kenton and attended St Helen's School in Northwood as a girl.

Anna, whose mother is a retired classical pianist, played the guitar and piano when she was young, and her eclectic music taste stretched from George Michael to Snoop Doggy Dog.

Middlesex tennis champion

She dabbled in ballet but it was on the tennis court that she really shone.

Anna, who played at the Cloisters Wood Club in Stanmore , handed her opponent a double-bagel as she swept to victory in the Under-10 Middlesex Junior Lawn Tennis Championship.

She later studied at Peterborough and St Margaret's School in Stanmore, where she gained seven GCSEs, and then Dr Challoner's High School in Buckinghamshire, which she left with two A Levels.

She admits she was never cut out for the world of academia, but that didn't stop her graduating with a 2:1 in popular music and recording from the University of Salford.

As a student, she launched her own club night in Manchester, dedicated to showcasing black talent, and took to the decks at venues across the UK and in Ayia Napa.

Success as a DJ

She was runner-up in the National Student DJ competition sponsored by the Ministry of Sound.

Since graduating, she has set up her own recruitment firm and was recently awarded a scholarship to study for a masters degree in management at UCL.

But music remains her passion and the 35-year-old, who describes herself as an urban music producer, until recently hosted a weekly show on Upfrontradio.co.uk showcasing the best urban tunes.

"I like to make people smile and bring joy to their lives through music," she said.

'I want my music to bring joy to people's lives'

"I want to make people feel strong and boost their morale. Not all rapping is about bullet-proof vests and stuff like that."

She began rapping about four years ago, though the X Factor auditions were the first time she had done so live.

She recently released the single Your Loving and is set to release another, called Hush Your Mouth , imminently.

She also claims to have been in talks with BBC Radio 1Xtra about securing a guest slot on Charlie Sloth's show.

Looking for love

Anna is currently single but looking for love.

"I'm looking for someone to share my life with. I want to find someone to settle down with and have children soon," she said.

She got plenty of love from the X Factor judges, securing a place in the show's bootcamp despite a "disappointing" response from Simon Cowell .

Judging from the comments on Twitter, her sunglasses have generated almost as much discussion as the performance itself.

She said she bought them from the fashion website Farfetch and they are one of two pairs she owns - the others being vintage Versace.
