'Football arrests have followed a downward trend'

West Ham United fans taunt Chelsea fans

Amanda Jacks, of the Footballer Supporters' Federation, said: "Football arrests have followed a downward trend in recent years and we're pleased to see them remain at historically low levels.

"Policing is generally getting better and fans are becoming more involved in match-day planning - all these factors have helped ensure that disorder at football matches is very rare.

"Football fans also face legislation that can lead to arrest for actions that don't exist as offences in other sports, such as drinking alcohol in sight of the field of play.

"While we try and educate fans as to the potential consequences of breaking the law in regards these offences, we do believe there is scope to repeal many of these discriminatory laws."

Plymouth Argyle and Wolverhampton Wanderers fans received the most last season with 21 each.

Millwall fans received 16 new banning orders while Nottingham Forest and Peterborough fans received 15 each.

Banning orders on the decline

Overall though, the number of active banning orders is on the decline.

A total of 2,085 were in force on August 1, the latest date for which figures are available.

That is a decrease of 96 (4%) from the number on September on 8 2015, which is when the last set of figures were released.

There were a total of 2,070 football related arrests last season, up by 22 from the season before.
