Chelsea Bridge and roads close to the river crossing were closed after a suspected unexploded Second World War bomb was found nearby.
The discovery was made at around 11.40am on Monday (July 21) morning, and caused severe traffic delays in the area.
Westminster Police tweeted shortly after 1.15pm that the bridge and surrounding roads had reopened, with traffic returning to normal.
Police received reports of a suspected unexploded Second World War ordnance near Grosvenor Road and the river crossing.
Cordons were put in place which closed the bridge and Grosvenor Road, as well as Chelsea Embankment and Ebury Bridge Road.
In a series of tweets, Westminster Police wrote: “We have temporarily closed Chelsea Bridge and Embankment due to suspected WW2 unexploded ordnance.
“Road closures remain in place around Chelsea Bridge, Embankment, and Ebury Bridge Rd. There is significant traffic – updates to follow.
“The incident at Chelsea bridge has now been resolved, and all roads re-opened. Thank you for your patience!”
Earlier this year an unexploded Second World War bomb found in Brondesbury Park was discovered, causing huge disruption over a number of days.
It was eventually detonated by the Royal Navy (see video above).
And this year's Varsity Boat Race was in doubt after a piece of World War Two ordnance near Putney Bridge.
